Happy New Year and an update from the ice
The year began with sunny, frosty weather. Unfortunately, once again it happened that snow fell just as the ice was forming on Lake Haukivesi. As you probably know, snow is an excellent insulator, and even though temperatures have dropped to around minus twenty degrees Celsius, the ice thickens slowly under the snow. On New Year’s Day I took a short walk on the ice of Lake Haukivesi to measure the ice. In some places the ice was up to eight centimeters thick, but in snowy patches only about half of that. So we still need to be patient before we can start marking the winter hiking route to Linnansaari.
The first ice fishing trip of the season took place on December 29, and the catch included several perch and a nice-sized pike. Ice fishing trips are held on a small pond where the ice is already solid and safe. Fishing-related updates can be followed on Instagram Oravifishing.
