Linnansaari Nature Trails
Linnonpolku Trail – 2 km
This trail takes visitors through varied terrain. Along the path, you can explore the prehistoric origins of Lake Saimaa and learn how natural forces and human activity shape the landscape. In the former slash-and-burn fields by the shores, you might spot the white-backed woodpecker—one of Finland’s most endangered bird species—and enjoy stunning views. The suggested walking time is about one hour, and the trail is well marked. The starting point is next to the kiosk.
Rengaspolku Trail – 7.5 km
The most popular hiking trail in the park leads you through groves and deciduous-like heathlands in fairly demanding and diverse terrain. You’ll cross Linnansaari Pond via a boardwalk with a handrail, which can be slippery when wet. Because of the boardwalk and challenging terrain, sturdy footwear is recommended. You can take a swimming break at Perpulanluhta’s sandy beach or on one of the many rocks along the route. The trail also leads to the best scenic viewpoint on the island—Linnavuori.
Estimated time: 3–4 hours. A good basic fitness level is required.
Rengaspolku Trail – 5.5 km
This shorter version of the 7 km Rengaspolku loop circles around Linnansaari Pond but does not go to the Linnavuori viewpoint.
Accessible Trails
Accessible routes lead from Sammakkoniemi Camping Area to the Linnansaari Croft yard (0.7 km) and from the croft to the junction at Linnansaari Pond (0.3 km). It’s recommended that wheelchair users be accompanied by an assistant.
Louhimaa Croft
Step into the lifestyle and self-sufficiency of our ancestors on the main island of the national park! The Linnansaari Croft has been restored as a window into the life of a traditional slash-and-burn farm. In addition to the buildings, the area includes old fields and meadows maintained by traditional farming methods. Through slash-and-burn practices and landscape maintenance, the surroundings are restored to their 1930s appearance. The croft and its buildings (except the granary) are always open for visitors.
In summer, the croft comes to life with slash-and-burn farming, grazing sheep and blooming flowers Welcome to explore!
